The sensors need to be able to talk to the control unit. Either wired or wireless technology may be used. Of course wired connections require running wires, but they do cover the power needs of the sensors. Wires can be cut. Wireless is easier initially, because there are no wires. It is generally harder to disrupt, depending on the wireless technology used. Power for the sensors can come from batteries for line power.
The control unit needs to have at least one method of signaling that there is a condition such as a possible break in or fire. Locally this may be done via flashing light or some loud sound such as a buzzer, siren, or voice. The control unit may also notify some central security station. This may be an alarm company facility, or in some cases it may be a local police station. In many areas, legal codes establish limits on the kinds of connections possible.
The control unit needs an interface for configuring the system and for activating or deactivating all or some of the system. For example, there might be specific system modes for everybody gone, night time, and day time. The user must have some way of activating it when the last person leaves and deactivating it when the first person arrives.
This is a brief overview of how burglar alarm systems operate. A well tuned system can greatly enhance the security of the home. Once it is properly installed and configured, it should have very minimal impact on day to day living.
