Will This Mean The End of Antarctica’s Exploration?

Long ago, off the volcanic coast of this wind-eroded shore, the whaling ship Antarctic dropped anchor, and sent a longboat to make it’s way to shore, struggling through the churning Ross Sea. The group aboard the longboat was lead by Captain Leonard Kristensen. They were the first people to set foot on the continent of Antarctica on January 24, 1895. This was all part of the voyage as they began to kill whales in waters that remained unclaimed.

The continent of Antarctica’s baptism was bloody. The Industrial Revolution energized the desire to massacre millions of Antarctic animals such as whales and penguins. The oil from these animals was used as a lubricant for machinery and their fur was an added bonus. On Marquarie island alone, hundreds if not thousands of penguins were herded up into giant vats of boiling oil, until they became oil themselves.

However, after 100 years of journeys to this Frozen Continent, humans have decided to stop using it to make a quick buck by killing the animals and have chosen to make Antarctica into a preserve of nature and science. There has been recent discussion into the inception of a world park. For science, Antarctica provides an opportunity to study the effects of global pollutants like the depletion of the ozone layer and the greenhouse effect. In the grand scheme of things, this change is remarkably fast. It was only a short time since humans discovered this continent and used it for a quick buck. Until the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958) there were only small regions of the coastline, islands, and a couple of paths to the South Pole that were even explored.

The presence of people in Antarctica has been a wild story; a story of ferocious tenacity, nationalist, idealism, and unrestrained butchery of nature, with the occasional scientific discovery peppered in for good measure. The whaling industry experienced a boom during World War I because of the oil needed to make glycerin for artillery shells. After World War II began, Americans and the Soviets both needed to produce extra-fine oil for their jet engines. So, the Soviets and the Americans both began hunting sperm whales. Prior to the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958, Antarctica was identified as the “Terra Incognita,” by medieval mapmakers.

The first birth in Antarctic was witness to great controversy and nationalistic pretension and was entirely purposeful. Because Argentina has a claim on a large part of Antarctica, they decided to fly Emilio Marcus Palmer’s mother to to their Esperanza Base in 1978 for the purpose of giving birth to him there and further cement their claim.

This was similar to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon nine years earlier and placing the American flag on the moon as a symbol of its dominance. The most unique and successful attempt at this type of patriotic feet was when Roald Amundsen raced to the South Pole in 1911 in honor of Norway’s King Haakon VII. The British Empire gained honor through the works of Robert F Scott and his group who undertook a similar journey, with the addition of rock and fossil sample collection which they carried with them in their homemade sleds.

Because of poor diet, and the toll that was placed on their bodies by having to haul heavy loads for many miles, these men became the first to succumb to the harsh Antarctic environment, thus making them martyrs for Antarctic science. Their efforts to become the first to arrive at the South Pole were in vain, as these men where beaten to the punch. Amundsen and his group had successfully made it to the Pole a month earlier. A rather unique attempt to stake America’s claim on the territory took place when a Ford Trimotor was flown over the South Pole by Richard Bryd in 1929. The battle to claim the continent continued when the Soviets attempted to justify their interests when the Russian Admiral Thaddeus Bellingshausen passed the Antarctic Peninsula during his voyage in 1821.

Nonetheless, deer, and all prey species, have eyes designed to detect motion. The Skinny On Bass Fishing Lures

The low-down on bass fishing lures is that there are thousands and thousands to choose from. And the way you label one as being the best, is by counting the bass you have managed to catch with it. If you are consistently catching fish, then you have a good lure. We all are aware that some lures will work better in specific fishing holes than others. It is always nice when your old dependables are not quite getting it done, to switch to something new and change the day.

I have fished a lot of farm ponds, and I have a lure that has brought me many days of good success catching bass. It is the black jitterbug. I found that about an hour before dark when everything gets still, and an hour after daylight, the bass will absolutely tear this thing up. So it is at the top of my favorite list. But if you poll a hundred fisherman, I may be the only one. It is based on MY success.

Next to my black jitterbug I place the old pork rind. The action from these is good and so have my results been. I am not in favor of the green ones that are full of whit spots, but I am indeed big on the black ones that show a little purple-colored stripe along the tails on the outside. I have had lots of good days using these lures and hauling in some very nice bass. You can hang one on a spinner bait for some good fishing as well.

A lot of people I know like using the Hula poppers. I have caught a few on them, but they have never worked really well for me. I am not sure why because they make a nice popping motion on top of the water that always made me think I should be seeing more action than what I was getting. But they just did not pan out for me.
