When it comes to home security, no one can be too careful. Whether you’re living alone or with your family it’s important to protect both your home and those within. There are various security systems available and many modern versions use wireless technologies. But how well do they work and how are they better than other designs?
No one likes to think about being the victim of a crime, but crime does happen; which is why security companies continue to do quite well for themselves. As security systems for the home have become ever smaller and more powerful, it’s become easier to ensure home security by installing these monitors in inconspicuous locations. However, with wireless home security systems, there are both pros and cons.
Naturally, the advantage of a wireless home security system is that it’s impossible for an intruder to disable them by cutting the wires, a weakness of wired systems. When your security system can be made completely useless with a single cut wire, then it’s probably not such a great investment in the first place.
Unlike a wired security system, a wireless system can also call the security company to alert them of a problem if the wires have been cut or there is a problem with the phone lines. A wired system is of course completely reliant on wires to operate and cannot do this – and cannot be installed just about anywhere the owner wants, since the cables involved are a physical limitation on the places you can use the system.
This means that they can be placed in hard to reach or hidden places in order to prevent someone from rendering your Home Security system useless. However wireless systems do have a few disadvantages. The first of which is battery life. While they may be wireless components they still need power and this is provided with batteries, unless of course the models you’re using can plug into a wall outlet.
Another potential problem with a wireless system is signal strength. There are many inexpensive systems whose signals are not powerful enough to travel a wide distance, especially if there are several walls in between the components of the system. It should also be noted that wireless signals can be jammed by specialized electronic equipment and while unlikely, it can happen.
Weather may also interfere with signal strength, which is something else to keep in mind. Inclement weather and solar flares can prevent a wireless home security system from functioning as intended – it’s usually not an issue, but again, it’s something that homeowners should keep in mind.
It would be wonderful to live in a world where security systems weren’t necessary, but unless crime disappears, then you need to make sure that your family and property are well protected. Even if you never have to actually use your home security system, you’ll sleep much better knowing that it’s there ready to protect you.
