Useful Techniques For Photographers

Monday, September 6th, 2010

When it comes to photography, the most important factor for most photographers is the sharp quality of their images. If a photographer wants to get the best quality, then he/she needs to know which lenses to use and when to use them. Everyday tools should include several lenses that are seen on the market today.

Facts about standard lenses: On the market today, the most common lenses being used are the standard lenses. These lenses have a focal length of between 40 -60mm and it’s useful to all photography types. Standard lenses are also known to be the most flexible of all lenses and should remain at all times on the camera’s body.

The importance of telephoto zoom lens: Telephoto lens are useful for those who are into wildlife photography. This can also be the perfect lens for sport enthusiasts because the focal length ranges from 60 – 300mm. With these lenses, photographers can capture far away objects as well as landscape images.

If you are to use these lenses for close-up shots, you need to be careful with your composition. Because large areas of the image will become blank, your picture could be destroyed.

Make sure that when you’re using telephoto lenses, your camera is supported with a tripod. If you don’t have a tripod, you can use a beanbag as an alternative and let your lens rest there while taking your images.

Facts about wide-angle lens: Wide-angle lens is what most landscape photographers prefer to use. Because it has a wide focal length of 17 – 40mm, you’ll be able to include as much of the scene as possible. If you want to add impact to your photography when using wider lens, then you need to be closer to your object. When it comes to ultra wide-angle lenses, the focal lengths are 8 – 28mm.

Facts about macro lens: Macro lenses have an average of 100mm focal length and are the best choice for ultra close-up shots. Macro lenses can be used to take pictures of small objects like birds and insects. Unique abstract images can also be taken using macro lenses. On natural shapes, use a wide aperture with a macro lens so that you can create perfect abstract images.

However, macro lenses are difficult to focus especially on windy days.

Is Digital Better Than Film?

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Digital cameras have all but replaced the old negative film cameras, right? Many people believe buying film is as outdated as buying corded phones that plug into the walls, but just like many people do still use corded phones many photographers’ still use cameras that require actual film. If you’re interested in photography or even want to do it on a more professional level, it’s worth comparing the two media to see what is best for creating innovative products like canvas prints or perhaps a photobook.

The big difference between digital prints and film prints is the amount of knowledge and time required to get a good print. With a digital camera you can snap as many pictures as you want and then dig through them later to pull out the great shots. You have to really focus on getting the right prints while taking fewer shots with film, since there is an actual end to the film where a new roll will be needed.

Digital prints can be sent in for printing through the computer or even printed from your own home, but printing your own prints from film requires more knowledge, a dark room, and a lot more time. The easiest way to get prints from a roll of film is to take it to a store offering developing services, but then you are at the mercy of whoever may be doing the developing to get the best prints. In most cases their best won’t meet your expectations for your prints. You can see how that would affect the quality of other products being made with your prints.

Finally, there is a lot involved with taking pictures from film. It is much easier and faster to set up a digital camera to take great shots, so only a select group of professional photographers go with film these days.

Digital pictures are easily uploaded online to create a variety of great items, including: * Photobook * Canvas Prints * Greeting Cards * Mugs * Calendars

Not only are these items fun to decorate your own home with, but they make great gifts. Imagine handing grandma a nicely designed photobook packed with images of her with the grandkids over the years. It’s very similar to making a scrapbook, except a photobook from a service like Photobox will be professionally made and perfectly bound. You can even select from different designs so it comes out just as you pictured it!

Canvas prints from digital images is actually an amazing process. This could not be done easily from film prints, but when you send high quality digital images to online services they can create beautiful prints on canvas which can be framed and presented as artwork in your home. Imagine your best pictures hanging beautifully from your living room wall.

Digitial photography is more popular today not only because it is so convenient, but because you can do so much with it. You can’t have your film prints turned into a photobook filled with special memories or into canvas prints to adorn the walls of your home. This is why digital photography is becoming the definition of photography in the minds of many people.

Film still has its place in the world for photographers who know how to get beautiful prints and do the developing for themselves, but for most of us sending digital prints to be turned into works of art is a more attractive option.

Great People Skills – A Must For Photographers

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Photographers need more skills than pushing the shutter down. While doing his/her job, a photographer needs to make their client feel comfortable. That’s where one’s people skills come in handy.

It takes skills and talent to take exciting and beautiful pictures. You can say that photography is an art and a business all in one. But if you don’t want your business to suffer, then you need to have people skills. If your clients don’t feel relaxed or comfortable, then your photography business won’t succeed. You people skills will help you make your clients feel relaxed and comfortable. They can become your long-term clients if they feel comfortable taking pictures with you. But if they feel uncomfortable, then don’t expect them to return.

Photographers and Great People Skills

Maintaining Eye Contact: If you’re going to use a tripod to take someone’s picture, it’s a good idea to step away from the camera to make eye contact after you’ve lined up the shot. Keep your eye contact as you give instructions about positions and angles. Rather than talk to them through your camera, do this instead so your clients will feel more comfortable. If you talk to them through your camera, then it can make them feel uncomfortable and alone. You can make your clients feel comfortable by keeping eye contact and speaking in a relaxed tone. Keep in mind that your client may not want to return if they have to talk to the camera for the whole session because it made them feel uncomfortable.

Interactions Remember that keeping the interaction going with your client through the entire session is important. Keep the conversation going, give a compliment or two, and just make them feel like they’re talking to friend. Earning their trust is possible through conversations, gestures, and body language. This could be hard if you’re a shy person. Being open with your clients can still be a possibility. You can practice your people skills alone or with friends and family. Imagine how your clients feel by putting yourself in their shoes.

The Dog Painter

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The difference between human portraiture and animal portrait painting is that while humans don’t mind posing, most animals do. An artist will have to give in a lot of effort just to keep an animal from getting distracted. This is the expertise of a female artist who resides in Wilmington. The Delaware family are her relatives. She has a grandfather who is a painter famous for his collection of sea and landscape paintings. By the time she was age 3, this female artist began to paint as well.

Even then, she drew mostly animals. By the time she was 10, she had her own show at the local library, and by the time she was 12 she was a children’s book illustrator. She studied all types of dancing with all widely known Philadelphia teachers. She continued to do solo dance for a good number of years, one of her most memorable performances being a death scene where she accidentally took a mouthful of kerosene from a lamp.

Painting portraits of dogs is what interests her most out of all the other animals she has made portraits of. You would be fascinated watching her start a dog’s portrait. As the owner helpfully tries to keep the dog still, she is already drawing several sketches on her sketch pad.

Her pencil flies over a sketch pad seeking poses most characteristic of the particular model. In the meantime she is constantly talking to the dog, telling him how beautiful he is, what a good dog and so forth. She uses all kinds of props, even tidbits of food to hold the animal’s interest. She also requisitions all the photographs the owner has with the request that she may make duplicates for her own collection. Next she collects three snips of hair, one each from the tail, ears and tummy, so that she can match colors. These snips she files under each dog’s name.

She decides on a pose and a composition with the perfect background to use for the photograph. The kind of dog or animal used in the shot will be the basis for the selection of the latter. She sketched her surroundings as she sat alone in a duck blind to capture what she needed for the portrait of a Chesapeake Bay retriever.

She says that animals can be judges, just like humans. An American pointer proves this point when he crept up behind one artist and tore her painting apart with his teeth. The medication he had to take afterwards was so much it makes us think that the painting really was ugly.

For portraits of beagles and bassets, she puts in scenery and a paw print and then proceeds to putting the symbols of the kennel club on the back. She even made abstract backgrounds, done with the aid of her own dog’s paw. Most of the time, animals don’t agree. A whole day’s worth of painting was wasted when one of the models left with one of the female dogs. While this may seem natural, it also seems that the unexpected can be expected when painting an animal’s portrait.

What Do You Need For Bird Photography?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

So you’re starting your journey into bird photography. Starting your photographic journey requires that you be prepared to take the right pictures, print them and more. One thing that bird photographers like to do is to create canvas prints or a photo book of their favourite shots. With the right shot and using the right tools, you can display a beautiful set of pictures for personal enjoyment or for others.

To begin, you will need the right equipment. If you want a clear picture from your shots, you should go for a digital SLR camera. You can always start with a pocket sized camera to get things going and for practice but the whole focus about bird photography is to capture the small details.

Some things you may want are long lenses for your camera, a tripod to hold your camera, and a pair of binoculars to spot the birds first. The binoculars are very important as you will be able to locate the birds rather than trying to zoom in with your camera. Once you find the shot you want to take, you need to carefully get into place without making too much noise.

Patience is something that is very important to getting the right shot. Smaller birds are always on the move so you need to wait while they are distracted. You’ll need to stay quiet and get as close as possible and wait for the right shot. Waiting for the right shot rather than taking a photo in a hurry will make a big difference in the result you get.

An important tip in taking a great photo is to focus in on the eye of the bird. Other parts of the bird’s body can be blurred but it’s important that you don’t miss the eye. You also want to make sure that you catch the bird at the right angle. You want the bird to have the right body language if you want to accentuate your shot.

Finally, if you’re looking to create some great canvas prints, you can go with companies that will print your photos for you. These companies can help you compile a really good looking photobook, help you create wall decor, cards, gifts, calendars, diaries, and more. Your photos can really turn into a work of art by using the services of these companies.

Of course, you can also create canvas prints and a photobook on your own. However, printing and designing requires a lot of time as well as the necessary equipment. If you really want to save time and use the services of an affordable company, you should check out Photobox. They offer many different ways to turn your photos in your custom artwork.

In conclusion, for bird photography, you’ll need the right equipment, learn how to take the right shot, and a way to print your photos. This is an amazing hobby and you’ll appreciate the time you spend in nature getting perfect photos of beautiful birds.

Digital Photography Suggestions For Close-up And Macro Mode Shots

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Get nearer with your macro function and you will discover a totally new arena of spectacular snapshot possibilities right below your nose.

An element of the attractiveness of close-up photography is that you have a whole world of picture taking possibilities to be discovered, typically directly beneath your nose so you are able to test indoors in the event the conditions are not very good outside.

With only a bit of imaginative productivity, perhaps the most every day items might make outstanding subjects and create spectacular photographs.

When you get in close proximity when using the macro function, you will discover an incredible, complex arena of detail typically unseen or even disregarded by the human eye.

To start with what on earth is Macro Function? – The term macro refers to really close up focusing upon themes that are only a few inches or even less from the camera.

Most digital cameras possess a valuable macro setting that permits you to focus closer than normal. The small indicator dimensions and also small lenses of sleek and stylish digital cameras have exposed the ability to take photos at a very small range allowing for really fascinating, sharp pictures.

The majority of digital camera models with a built-in zoom capability incorporate either a Macro system function or possibly a Macro focusing feature. Both of these options force your camera to focus significantly nearer than usual, at times just a few centimeters from the front of the actual lens.

It is usually indicated through a tiny floral symbol and sometimes features its own option on the photographic camera body.

Macro modalities differ broadly in their usefulness. A few can easily fill the frame with a coin; others fight to focus on a sheet of writing paper.

You would employ the macro function when the little details genuinely count, including the intricate fine detail on jewelery or even smaller bugs for instance bumble bees upon a flower stem.

Determined by your photographic camera, your zoom selection will be limited to broad angle settings. You may also have to manually specify the focus. Your camera will probably not enable you to opt for any overrides on this fully programmed setting. For example, depending on your photographic camera, it might eliminate the flash to counteract extreme brightness that may occur in extreme close-up digital photography.

To obtain the best from the macro setting, I recommend that you employ a tripod to counteract blur from camera shake. This is usually a real problem and ruins numerous pictures in the event the digital photographer is taking high magnification pictures.

If the digital camera is installed on the tripod, a flip-out, swivel Liquid crystal display monitor is really a huge benefit as you can then readjust the angle of the Liquid crystal display screen to give you a very clear view of the image even inside tight quarters.

Why Having Show Dogs On Your Art Canvas Can Be A Great Idea

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

As this lady artist from Pasadena comes in to work on her most unpredictable clients, some troubles bark up at her. Polite and patient poses as mother did for whistler is not something that these thoroughbreds can do. It would be the subject who will dictate on everything, he will sit for a very brief time to enable the lady to examine its aristocratic features and off it goes as soon as a scratch at an imaginary flea or a bark that signals his attention is cut sounds off.

The 67 year old house she occupies with her husband has transformed the second floor studio to enable her to do most of her preliminary sketching with the use of a trusty instant camera, enabling her to capture these feisty dog subjects. There are better poses on some dogs and she should know for she has created countless portraits of both cats and dogs. She has noticed that dogs who happen to be highly trained show breeds and seem to be downright vain about their appearance are the better posers.

Purebred canines are what most of her dog clients are. They are very much easier to paint than mixed breeds because they have better recognizable skeletal structure and shades of coats. When it comes to playing favorites, this portraitist reveals that she gives that award to purebred hounds as this breeds have very short hair and an excellent and easily seen bodily structure. In addition, she love to capture his perfectly marvelous expression.

She works at the local observatory as technical illustrator during the week and is also a well known water color landscape artist. A well known gallery houses her best works of art. She learned to become a magazine illustrator after studying at an art school in New York. Painting dogs was something that one teacher asked her to try.

Using first hand knowledge, this animal lover would go around new York’s dog show events to carefully study and draw the finest dog breeds. Making a portrait of a dowager from New York’s dog was her first commission. Mounted on an exquisite frame was this painting of a dog which was felice signed, where it sat next to Rembrandt and Frans Hals originals, part of the lady dowager’s prized collections. Very shortly afterward, she released a sketch book with her description and studies the American kennel club’s acknowledged breeds and it was received well by so many people.

Any serious artist would fall in love with the studio found on the second floor and this was what she did when her family moved into California back in the year 1913, in a Pasadena craftsman’s home. So that their pets can be immortalized in paint and canvas, they come to this wonderful place and take their barking, furry buddies along. Charcoal and oil are second options for this lady who likes to depict her canine clients in pastels. She gets work more than what she can bear with during the Christmas season.

Just like painters of human beings, she readily admits to flattering her non human subjects just a little bit. Purebred hounds known as salukis whose bloodlines reach as far back to the time of ancient Persia and Egypt are being taken care of by her and her husband who was an electrical engineer back then.
