There are four kinds of scent cartridges: ceramic, cell foam, pearl beads and high performance cartridges. Ceramic cartridges are basically ceramic “bricks” that are developed in a way that is ideal for fragrance infusion. Assuming they are used a few hours a day, ceramic cartridges can last a few months. Cell foam cartridges have a higher output of scent, but not a longer one. These hand made cartridges have the unique ability to store a great deal of fragrance, and release in quickly. These characteristics make it quite useful for special uses, such as in special effects productions. Pearl beads have an even higher output of fragrance, especially over a vast area. For example, 10 kgs of pearl beads will cover 215,000 square feet. The high performance cartridges have the highest output of scent and are considered the most convenient to use. Compared to pearl beads, they are easier handle, especially for loading and unloading.

Scenting has become the secret weapon of the retail world. Retail stores wanting to draw customers through their doors may consider using a scenting system that emits an aroma suited to their product lines. Perhaps a bath and body store could use a rose or vanilla scent. A furniture store could try a cedarwood or leather scent. When a retailer uses scent to capture the attention of passersby, they are inviting the person to investigate the source of the scent and in turn, view the products available for sale. Certain aromas can cause the potential customer to feel inspired, relaxed or even motivated to purchase. Luxurious resorts have begun creating a signature scent, which surrounds their facilities and becomes a smell the guest will always associate with the resort. This works exceptionally well if there are multiple affiliated locations around the world. Each time the guest enters the property, they are reminded of a past vacation via the signature scent.

During the Middle Ages, before sewage and formal waste facilities were invented, the cities and streets of European countries were ensconced in foul odors. Paris, France was especially bad. Finally, scenting systems are now being used as a powerful tool with training emergency crews. Creating a realistic environment during a training program is very important and now these programs are including some of the same techniques that are used in the movie business – but with the addition of scent. It is important for emergency personnel to identify certain odors as they may be a sign of danger. Additionally, once the trainee has experienced the scent in relation to rescue methods, then the memory is written. When in a real situation of disaster or rescue, that memory will be triggered by the same scents. It is a valuable tool in search and rescue training, lasting long past most other training methods.

However it is becoming an increasingly popular item offered by plumbers and contractors when building new homes. Some homeowners who decide to renovate their home are even adding misting systems as a future selling point.

Resorts, hotels and golf clubs have been using misting systems as an added service for their clients for awhile, but now restaurants, retail centers and theme parks are beginning to see the benefits as well. Restaurants with large patios can increase their table turnover, and even attract customers, by installing misters on their patio. Seating inside an air conditioned establishment will become less crowded and patio tables will become more useful now that customers can sit and enjoy their meal in a cool environment while still outside. Shopping malls are almost always well air conditioned, but what about that wall of heat as you step back outside – it can be brutal. The installation of a misting system at the exits of the building will give the customer a pleasurable boost when leaving the mall, and may bring them back. Or, misting can be used for designated outdoor smoking areas to keep patrons cool but also help “scrub” the air. Theme parks are lots of fun except for one thing: the lineups. But waiting in line for your favorite ride would be a lot less painful if there was a cooling mist falling around you. Large outdoor concerts and events are also great places for misting. Keeping cool and hydrated is very important when you are in the sun all day, and having a misting system in place could help prevent cases of sun or heat stroke.

Some more mundane (but just as important) uses for misting systems are on farms, school or daycare playgrounds, construction sites and with emergency personnel. Farmers find misting an essential tool in keeping their animals cool during the hot summer months. Systems are often installed in open air barns, stables and dairies. Children are far more susceptible to heat stroke than adults, therefore keeping them cool is even more important. Misting in the school yard or playground is a great tool in preventing children from getting too hot. When demolition of a structure is underway, an incredible amount of dust can rise, often containing asbestos and other harmful chemicals. Workers wear protective gear, but on a hot and sunny day the battle to keep cool and be protected from the toxic dust is tough. Having a misting system in place is a great way to trap the dust in the water molecule before it rises too high in the air. The water weighs the dust down, making drop out of the way of workers. Another equally important use of misting systems is in cooling down military and firefighting personnel. Heat stress is a common ailment among firefighters when they are addressing an emergency. Providing a means of cooling down quickly could save their life. That is equally so with military personnel working in hot environments such as airplanes, ships and on work parties.
