The Range Available To Furnish And Inspire The Novice Is Very Extraordinary

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Last evening I was looking with some disinterest through the catalogue proffered by a well known chain shop and I fell across the pages showing fishing tackle. I was really completely stunned by a few of the deals available on kits of tackle, mostly aimed towards those interested in starting fishing.

It was somewhat different to what was open when I was a lad. Then, the corresponding place to go to was Woolworths, to choose from the Winfield brand which was, frankly, rubbish. They used to come apart rather fast but the main thing was that by the time they did, one was primed to get finer bait and tackle anyway, or you had decided to desist with angling anyway.

I have little doubt that the fishing tackle sets that the catalogue store have are of rather unexceptional quality, which is of course ideal for the beginner. Things like float sets will certainly last for a very long time and be ideal for any tackle dangler wanting to restock lost bait and tackle, but for fathers or uncles wanting to introduce small family members to the enjoyment of angling, these sets are ideal.

There is too a psychological plus to be found in maintaining the interest of the recently inspired fisherman, which is that, once they choose to have a go and find pals who are also interested, to make off to the canalside with a complete set of bait and tackle will gather approving glances all round and engender a feeling of wellbeing which will be always associated with angling.

Of course there will have to be plenty of fatherly teaching beforehand in order to make sure that he or she knows how to set up the fishing tackle with some ability before letting them to embark on their own exploits. I well remember my initial trip out, which was an inter-troop fishing competition with the scouts. I had only been out a few of times with my uncle and finished up getting into the most awful muddles and forsaking most of my fishing line as a result. It was most humiliating as I spent almost the entire afternoon trying to unpick a cavalcade of cats’ cradles, then getting aggravated and cutting the line and beginning again.

This is not the way to promote fresh blood into the hobby. fishing can be a intricate process, and for novice needs to be trained how to appropriately setup the fishing tackle before setting out on their own.

And for this purpose, the sort of fishing tackle kits are perfect to give the desire to learn the finer points.

Want To Start Ice Fishing? Here’s What You Need

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Name just about any activity that the entire family can do in the Winter and you can count on it costing hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to outfit yourself and family. But there is one sport the family can do that you can get started in for less than a hundred dollars or so. This sport is Ice Fishing. It’s wholesome fun that you and your family will enjoy, plus you just might fill the freezer with tasty fish!

But what does a Beginner need start ice fishing? One has a variety of choices in fishing tackle available today, a Greenhorn can easily shuck out 100’s of dollars on ice fishing supplies and not have the basic gear to get out on the ice.

With this in mind, I sit down and made up this guide that will help you select the basic gear you’ll need to get started in the Sport of Ice Fishing. You’ll be surprised to know that most of this gear can be had for less than a hundred dollars or so. If you want to spend more, then by all means do so, but if you’re just wanting to try it out a few times, then the money invested is minimal.

To get started, you’ll first be looking at ice augers. It’ll be hard to start fishing through the ice without a hole! Many first timers choose a manual ice auger. For small fish, you’ll be looking at an auger that will bore a 5 to 6 inch hole in the ice. Should you want to catch bigger fish like Walleye, Pike, Musky, Bass or Catfish, you’re need a larger hole. One in the 8 to 10 inch range. Just keep in mind that the bigger the hole, the harder it will be to bore it with a manual ice auger. This is why you’ll see many ice fishermen using a power auger to drill their holes.

You’ll need a way to get the fish to the surface. For this, you’ll want to use tip ups or a rod and reel. Multiple tip ups allow you to fish many holes while a rod and reel will restrict you to only one hole at a time. Some ice fishermen increase the odds of them bringing home fish by using a combination of tip ups and rod and reels.

Don’t overlook the line you’ll be using to catch fish. Regular fishing line will become brittle and break easily when fishing through a hole in the ice. Look for fishing line that is designed specifically for ice fishing. There are many on the market or you can order it through catalog retailers such as Cabela’s.

Now you need something to catch the fish. For panfish like Crappie, Bluegill and Yellow Perch, I like to use mealworms, spikes or nightcrawlers. I also carry along an assortment of ice fishing jigs and spoons. For the bigger fish such as Pike and Bass, I like minnows or tear drop jigs and spoons as these fish can be aggressive. It’s not a bad idea to check with local fishermen to see what they like to use on a specific body of water to catch fish through the ice. This will save you a lot of trial and error in the beginning.

Standing long hours on the lake waiting for fish to bite can get old. Make sure you bring along something to sit on or to wait out the fish. Some people bring lawn chairs while others use a simple five gallon bucket. If you have the funds and really want to get fancy, then a small heated hut can really spoil you!

And that is all you really need to get started ice fishing. It’s a simple Sport that doesn’t require a huge output of cash to be successful. Just follow the regulations for your area and become familiar with safety rules of ice fishing before leaving to get out on the ice. Have fun and don’t be afraid of being sociable on the ice. You might be surprised to find out that ice fishermen like to hang out and shoot the breeze a little. Just don’t crowd other fishermen when fishing!

You can find lots of ice fishing gear on ebay. This will slash your cost while saving money on your next ice fishing purchases. Be sure and get quality equipment before heading out on the ice. Nothing is more frustrating that having equipment break downs while trying to enjoy a day of ice fishing. This includes your tip ups and fishing reels.

Allowing The Brain Drift Is A Delight That Gets Rarer With The Passing Of Years

Friday, January 21st, 2011

I read a tweeting conversation the other day between a pair of people nattering about dreaming and one of them highlighted the weirdness of having the radio on after the alarm went off but you’re not actually awake. That really lit a spark with me, as I recall some smashers I had when I used to have my clock radio and the Today programme came on and I was in that 2nd stage of sleep, where you are not really asleep but below that stage where you’re just emerging to consciousness. The radio gets into the ears and what they are picking up gets woven into the dreams and it’s wonderful.

permitting the mind to drift is a great thing and it’s increasingly difficult to do. I used to do it when giving the car a long scrub, when there’s not a lot to think about what you are doing you cannot get better than just picking a train of thought and following it to see where it goes. I can’t do it these days because my son insists on ‘helping’ with car washing and doing as much as he can. But soon, when I return to fishing, I will have the time and opportunity to just sit back, keep an eye on the fishing tackle and let the mind off into itself.

I completely believe it helps to keep the flexible as I used to watch myself going down tangents and making all manner of connections, testing my memory and trying to work out issues. Also it’s a brilliant method for going over times of your life, places visited and people met. Of course it can be troublesome as well, drifting back over one’s career and thinking “where did it all go wrong?” :o )

Maybe it’s me, but the time I get to be able to allow the mind to meander is becoming ever fewer. It’s another reason why ceasing angling was a stupid thing to let happen, especially as the normal moment for the imagination to meander when it happens, if it happens, is at the wrong part of the sleep timetable, and it keeps one awake which is not what we want at all.

A functioning imagination is a crucial part of the fishing tackle, not only since you have to adapt to the situation of the day, but also the part of the year. angling in summer is straightforward, especially around June when the season has just started and the fish have forgotten about being caught previously and the newly hatched fish never have been. Later though, angling becomes harder as the fish wise up, the weather affects how the fish feed and where, so you have to be able to adapt.

Changing a variety of baits and tackle for fishing is essential as very often a period of testing is needed before finding the best combination for what will tempt the fish into going after the trap on the hook. And, then when satisfied with the setup it’s a chance to sit back, take it easy and watch the mind go. And don’t push it! It will not work if you decide the journey or push the pace, all that happens then is that you are left wondering what’s on the telly later.

So, the point is to pack your mind along with the fishing tackle since, as well as the sheer fun to be had fishing, it’s a bonus to be able to keep the mind supple, the memory freshened up and inspired.

I Have Had Plenty Of Openings To Continue The Tackle Dangling I Loved In My Younger Days

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

My absence from the canal-side in the years since I stopped angling looks so strange to me now. I used to enjoy it so much, particularly because my other endevours tended to be at the highly athletic end of the spectrum, playing as I did rugby, football and cricket for assorted school and village sides. Having the chance to get my fishing tackle, jump on a bike and cycle for the ten minutes to get to the local fishery and spend a few hours quietly sat with a rod in my hand and looking at a float on the water was a joy.

When I left 6th form college, “by mutual consent” as the football parlance has it, following the first year when it was clear that I had played about too much in the first year to have any possibility of gaining any A levels at the end of the 2nd, would have been the best time to relax in spring and summer evenings with my fishing tackle instead of slaving over some economics homework.

And because I was working, in a department store caf, I was earning and had more funds on the hip than I had ever had previously and a day off during the week which would have been ideal to get out to the lake and have a few hours if not a whole day fishing with the place almost to myself. Even better, since I was working in Guildford, visiting the fishing tackle shop should have been easy and I could have had pints of maggots to drown. This was unheard of before I left education since our village didn’t have a fishing tackle shop apart from a very small part of one shop had a limited selection, and definitely no live bait on offer, and to get into Guildford and back having visited the fishing tackle shop to get some would have taken ages and was not worthwhile.

In later years, I worked for a big utility company in Staines which had it’s own fishing lake and still I never felt the urge to end for the day, get the fishing clothes on and enjoy an hour down there after work. Even sillier, less than fifty meters across the road was the Thames which has some great fishing that went entirely ignored by me, especially because by then I was earning really good money and had the opening to get some really fabulous fishing in the fishing tackle bag.

Later on, again I was employed by for a business that had it’s building right on the waterfront, and quite often on breaks a gang of us would go and sit on the steps on a nice clear day and watch people angling, and as every alternate week saw my shifts finishing at 4 o’clock, it would have been very simple to pick the fishing tackle out of the car and see off the day with a couple of hours fishing. I might have enjoyed the job more too, thinking about it.

We know other priorities present themselves as you go through the years. After I left 6th form I discovered pubs in quite a big way. Ladies were never a challenge of course, I don’t ever recall any throwing themselves at me and beseeching me to ravish them, so that normally would not have been a difficulty to deciding on a days fishing, but it just seemed that at that time I’d put the fishing tackle away and forgotten about it.

That’s altering now though. I do have the desire to go back, I have had my fishing tackle out to check it over and see what has to be replaced, which is nearly all of it, and I’ve been finding places to go and what I need to do in order to be allowed to fish there, so hopefully I can renew some of the enjoyment from my formative days.

A Top Scheme For A TV Show To Highlight Maggot Drowning And Regenerate The Talk-Show

Monday, January 17th, 2011

I’ve had a fabulous idea for a telly programme. Following on from Robert Llewellyn’s (Kryton in Red Dwarf) fabulous Car Pool, in which he chats to famous folk as he gives them a lift somewhere, I have a vision of Tackle Out – a talk-show where the host takes off angling with a notable face and they sit by a canal and chat about this and that.

Much of the talk must of course be related to whatever the person is promoting, a film, book etc, but the topics could drift around locations that person likes to go fishing, where else they have been fishing and what their favourite fishing tackle is, where they get it and their angling history and tales.

fishing has previously given a good backdrop to a telly show, in recent times Rich Hall did a programme sitting in a boat, on the water with his chum, doing comedy. And Robson Green has had a programme about extreme angling in various parts of the world. There have also been cult figures to come from TV shows about fishing, most famously of course is the marvellous Rex Hunt from the Fishing Adventures, but in Britain, John Wilson stands out.

The show could be quite broad scoped. Considering the prospective interviewees who are known to be keen when it comes to the piscatorial pursuits; Jeremy Paxman would be stimulating, Billy Connelly would be great fun, possibly some real feeling in having a programme where Paul Gascoigne could talk about his troubles, and a host of well known faces from all walks of life such as Diana Rigg could well be easily persuaded if they were to be taken out for a day with the fishing tackle and chat about themselves for a few hours.

There is a model for such a show. Many years ago, the idol of golf commentary presented a similarly themed show where he talked to a well known golf fan in ‘Around With Alliss’ which provided gentle, amusing chat with someone wholly relaxed because they were pursuing their hobby.

What a prospect the show may be! The chat-show needs restoring. Jonathan Ross’s BBC1 show went on in unchanged form format for too long, the Graham Norton show that has succeededit is a bit samey so how about a programme that can appeal to people who are players in the most popular participation sport, the guests could bring in those who are not actual worried about fishing but may be drawn to it as a result. There could be help on fishing tackle for anglers at all levels, what you have to have to get started, different sorts of fishing and fishing tackle that might be needed for canals as opposed to lakes or gravel pits as well as demonstrating how fishing aids the maintenance of the water environs.

The more I think about it, the more I like the plan. It does not need to be primarily an fishing show, in fact much better if it is not, but it could a goer and I shall write to the BBC at once!

A Marvellous Weekend With Plenty Achieved And A Number Of Appealing Questions To Be Asked

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Away we go for a new week following a superb break which was massively enjoyable, none of which included angling. On Friday night I went into Birmingham, not something I would normally do as I get flustered in cities being very much the out of town chap, but I was out to see Big Country at the O2 Academy. The concert was fantastic, with Mike Peters standing in for the late, great Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson’s son Jamie strumming 2nd guitar.

I fervently hope that a live album will follow the end of the tour when the 2nd part ends in April as it will go directly onto the iPod on my iPhone. Which brings me to my issue for the day, is the personal stereo an acceptable item of the modern fishing tackle? I do not know what the attitude is in today’s fishing protocol, but I think that such a solitary undertaking will inevitably mean that plugging in the personal stereo is a sore temptation for many. But if swims are positioned by the water at fairly close distances, the last thing the neighbours want when they are angling is the tch tch tch tch etc from next door if they prefer not to have their own sounds.

I cannot say for certain what my preference might be. I love my music, my taste tends to range from Dylan to Def Leppard. I do not really get much time to use my personal stereo as a rule, but I also have always viewed fishing to be something to be done quietly to allow for time by myself to relax and be alone but with a point that isn’t too strenuous. So do I want to put my personal stereo in with my fishing tackle? It’s a tricky one.

On Saturday I returned to the city, this time with the family as we fancied going into the city for something of a change. I hadn’t been in since the city centre was regenerated although I did go once during the building and got so horribly lost that I refused to go back. But I was very impressed, we went to the Bull Ring and Selfridges, though the issue is that it is, as always in shopping centres, the normal same chains of shops as you see everywhere else. It is a great shame that specialist retailers don’t get a look in. Has anybody ever tried to set up a chain of fishing tackle shops? I do remember that there was a very smart looking music shop (by which I mean a shop for people performing music rather than another HMV) but that did not last long. It might it’s the nature of the expert shop that they need to be found in corners and backstreets and have that local knowledge and custom rather than a more open location or presence in shopping centres and precincts.

I think it’s a shame because the specialist shop for things such as fishing tackle or modelling tend to be run by the enthusiast and will never make the owners wealthy (and I freely recognise that in the majority of cases they have no desire to be so), but why can’t someone make a very general fishing tackle chain work and entice more people to the sport as a result? I know that many will be aghast and say that a big chain will put the authentic local specialist down the drain, but I don’t concur because when someone decides to come into the sport, gets their first set of fishing tackle and a feel that they want to continue, the experts will then come into their own. Also, operators of shopping precincts such as Westfield may not be too happy on one of their outlets being a breeding ground for maggots and other live bait so again, the dedicated will get the business.

It was fantastic, another opening to see my favourite band of all time, a day out with the family and a quiet Sunday at home makes for the idyllic weekend.

As Soon As The Moment And Conditions Are Suitable, You Will Find Me By The Waterside

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

The best news today is that my bed doesn’t dislike me. I’m not sure about the source of the shoulder pain still, but the problem with my neck is Cricket Ache caused by nodding off in front of the television whilst watching the Ashes and not being able to keep some wakefulness. At least I was able to see the conclusion of the match. It will not be repeated, I am very much a Test match follower and will not be bothering to remain up for the limited over games. Besides, this being a Friday, in future weeks I’ll be aiming to get an early start at work so that I can sneak off in after lunch to go angling.

What with my wife going back to work following an extended sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in 2 weeks, and the likelihood of the weather becoming milder through February and March, the siren song of the canal towpath will very likely be overwhelming now that I have decided to update the fishing tackle and start angling again.

When I was checking through my fishing tackle recently, I found an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which most likely was the last occasion I went angling. It appears an awfully long time and yet I recall it clearly, a sunny day in June when I went for a day’s fishing on the Thames at Walton, and I snagged my only ever barbel. This could seem peculiar, but the majority of the angling I did as a boy was on a fishery in the village where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.

In those days, I did not have a great deal of fishing tackle as I did not have very much money and yet I still have most of it from then. I find it astonishing that even when I used to earn plenty of money, I never really thought about fishing or spending some money and buying some really top fishing tackle and using up more time by the water.

When I do go back, I will need to lay out some cash, initially getting a rod licence and joining the Birmingham Anglers Association who control angling on the canals close to here, then I will need some new fishing tackle as mine is ancient and possibly illegal now, especially the hooks which all look to have barbs which I’m pretty sure are not allowed now.

I cannot wait to return, though I’m not embarrassed to admit that I was always and assuredly will be now, a very fair weather fisher, so I will need dry, warm conditions. It doesn’t have to be sunny, just not soaking and freezing and if it is a Friday after my wife has returned to work (and I’m legal) then the chances are I’m going to go fishing. Fantastic.

With The Present Mrs Izzard’s Hospital Management Finishing I Have Lots More Time For Me At Last

Monday, January 10th, 2011

AIt could be I’m getting old or my bed is angry with me, but I’m waking up in the morning with a painful left shoulder and today my neck is stiff too. It’s extremely maddening as it is sore to lift my head straight. If I was to get the fishing tackle out and head for the water today, I fear that fishing would be quite painful instead of what it should be, which is chilling.

Angling is an opening for anyone to be able to spend some useful time by oneself, contemplate where life is taking one and what can be changed, what is going well and what is not. One receives so few openings to be alone and I honestly believe that could be a source for an accumulation of unwanted stress. For instance, I work at home, my wife has also been at home on long term sick leave having being diagnosed with breast cancer in April last year. The main thing is that since I am at home, I have been able to be there for her, drive and be with her when she’s been receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy and then subsequently when she’s been getting the after effects I can look after our son.

However, the converse was that, especially during the radiotherapy, which was each weekday, I wasn’t able to settle to doing any work. After the trip to the hospital and back, which was at least a 90 minute exercise, then getting Will to school, having some lunch, picking up Will again and coming home, there was hardly a period of an hour or more until late in the day when I could actually get down with doing anything which clearly meant that any idea of getting the fishing tackle out of the garage and doing a bit of fishing was all but out of the question. This raises my stress levels loads, with little opportunity of taking a decent break.

What is occurring now is that things are calming down. Chemo and radiotherapy is over, and my wife is looking to head back to work on January 17th which is very exciting. She will have to have an intravenous herceptin injection every three weeks but there are no foul side effects from that. So, since she will be fetching Will from school on her way home every day, it appears that if I wanted to, I could steal a few hours of an afternoon doing some fishing at one of the local canals. I do have a need to get some new fishing tackle before I can go anywhere, as well as get a rod licence and join the Birmingham Angling Association to be qualified to fish the canals, but with a bit of luck I can get everything sorted out by the time she returns to work.

Whether I can spend an afternoon angling of course, will be dependant on work and whether I can do enough done in the mornings to be able to leave it and swap the laptop for the fishing tackle. Perhaps Friday afternoons will be the easiest to justify, but at least since I work for myself then I will know if I absolutely can afford to bunk off.

Sorting Out The Solution Of Seating Properly May Be The Difference To A Day’s Angling

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

I wonder what the best seating selection is when out angling? I currently have, as I found when I took my fishing tackle down from the garage shelf the other day, a little collapsible seat which is rather ancient and I fear will struggle to bear me for very long. Partly due to metal fatigue but generally to do with the fact that there is a lot more of me than there was the last time I sat beside a river.

I had always wanted a huge fishing tackle box that doubles up as a seat just since by definition it is so useful. However, during bad weather I would think they will tend to form pools which you really wouldn’t like to sit on without waterproof trousers. Also, for their height, they might make rather fine footstools, so some kind of nice folding garden chair could be in order. And it will also be preferable to the previous 2 choices as it will have a back to it.

So, if the garden chair is the best choice, what sort? Some of the requirement for angling is that, once you get into a fish, it is necessary to be stood up, and if it’s a tench or some other bigger species, it is will fight and could take some time to land, and so again, if it’s raining then the cushion could easily get saturated and the probability of piles becomes a factor. So it could be a slatted seat could be the answer, however not plastic as that could be unwelcome in cold conditions.

I have spotted a range of camp beds for angling, but I cannot imagine any angling trip I go on is going to need anything like that, although a mini tent as an alternative to an umbrella could be a fantastic addition to the fishing tackle, but in all of this is the requirement that everything has to be carried to the peg which may conceivably be quite a way, and it would be better to be able to get all of it there in 1 trip rather than a relay.

Bearing that in mind, we must now consider that we have a large fishing tackle box to double as a footstool over one shoulder, I have a rod carrier over the other shoulder which will also be bearing some sort of garden chair, a keep net and landing net in one hand which will only leave one hand free to carry something like a lunch box, or bait if there isn’t space in the box.

But as long as the day’s angling is enjoyable, it will all be worthwhile. And even if the fish aren’t necessarily feeding, if it’s a warm day then a little solitary time with nothing to do other than think about whatever comes to mind can be considered as a good day’s angling. It’s very hard to do that with a cold, wet botty.
