Tips On Growing Orchids – Thai Style

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Orchids have the reputation of being hard to grow in the West. Gardeners shy away from attempting to grow them because they think that they are a problem to grow and because they are costly. This is easily understood, but there is more to the story than that. The fact is that most countries have their own native orchid species, so it is not that difficult to grow orchids wherever you live, if you pick the right species.

The other side of the coin is that what most gardeners in the West think of as orchids are orchids from exotic countries and they can be a problem to grow. I say difficult to grow, but that is not the whole story either. If you can create an environment similar to where the orchids come from, it need not be a problem at all.

A lot of the spectacular orchids are parasites, like mistletoe is a parasite plant in the temperate countries of the West. These orchids frequently grow on trees. In trees and on trees, that is. So, their natural environment is to be attached to the bark of a living tree or to get lodged in the fork of a branch.

The orchid will then suck its nutrients and water from the inside of its host much in the same way as does a flea or a bed bug. Another thing to be aware of is that if a plant lives under the canopy of a tree, it hardly ever, if ever, experiences strong sunlight. Wooded regions are also fairly humid. It is also worth mentioning that exotic plants usually come from warm or hot countries.

Therefore, if you can reconstruct these conditions of providing warmth, humidity and a host, growing exotic orchids should not be that much of a problem. And in truth, it is not, although in the West it might require a greenhouse.

Thailand is home to many parasitic orchids, most of which grow on trees in the forests, which are warm to hot and humid, but most Thais do not live in those conditions. Most Thais live in either open villages or cities where conditions are not favorable to growing jungle orchid varieties. However, most Thai gardeners do not need or even have greenhouses.

Instead, if a Thai gardener is interested in growing jungle orchid species, he or she will buy (or acquire) the root complex of a dead tree which also has a tree stump of, say, a metre attached. They will then move this tree stump in to a very shady place, say, under a canopy and grow their wild jungle orchids on that.

How is that done?, you may ask. Well, it is actually simplicity itself. First you acquire a sample of the orchid and then you affix it to the stump with a ’strap’ of something that will both permit the orchid to expand and to breathe. Most Thais use some of the fibres from inside a coconut.

The gardener will strap the baby orchid to the stump using the coconut matting as a band-aid with either staples or small nails. By the time the orchid has buried its roots into the host, the matting will have rotted away, as will probably the staples.

The only thing left to do is to keep the tree and the baby flower well watered so that it can suck the remaining nutrients out of the dead tree. They will thrive for numerous years under these conditions and the tree stump will be a living flower pot, of sorts.

Wedding Gift Bag Ideas For Your Guests

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

It’s traditional for the bride and groom to get presents on their wedding day, and it is expected that they give a little something back. Just like a kid’s birthday party where party favors are given out to everyone who attends, weddings guests should get a little favor bag to help remember your special day too.

Sometimes it can be hard to decide what your gift bag should be, usually because there are so many different types of people from all aspects of your life coming. You’ll have your family, your many groups of friends, possibly some coworkers, and of course your other half’s invitees. How do you find something that would appeal to everyone?

Before you get into the favors, start with the design of the bag. If you have a theme, the bag should match the theme. Otherwise a pretty white bag usually works out well. Any bag you have should have some way of tying it such as string or ribbon. Also try to find a type of bag that is durable so the favors don’t fall out. Cloth bags or totes are amazing gift bags because your guests can reuse them rather than throw them out. If you want to have separate favors for the men and women attending, have the bags be different colors such as the traditional pastel blue and pink.

Having different favors for men and women can be a good way to go if you can’t decide on something that is universal for both sexes. For women, you can use things such as special beauty product samples, small bottles of nail polish, or even nice lotion. Men would probably prefer to have something that has the name of the bride and groom on it, so custom made favors would be ideal. Of course there are many unisex favors you can have, such as candles, candies, and bubbles for blowing during the special occasion.

If you are going with a themed wedding, than that should be a strong factor in deciding what you will give your guests as favors. Silly gifts are perfectly acceptable as long as they match theme. As an example, if you are having a tropical themed wedding and reception, leis make great gifts. You could also include dancing hula girls, coconut lotion, and tropical flowers for your guests to take home.

Alternatively, if there isn’t a theme and you are still having trouble deciding, you can take the season that your wedding is occurring into account. If you are having a summer wedding, gifts such as sunglasses and sunscreen can be fun and useful presents, especially if any part of the occasion takes place outdoors. For a winter wedding, scarf and glove sets make excellent gifts that will get a lot of use.

The most important thing about your wedding gift bags is that you are happy with them. While you want to please your guests, they all know that it is your special day and will be thankful that you thought of them, so choose whatever favors work for you.

Gizmos For Young Men

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

When I was little, I remember collecting buckets of Lego just to be capable of building replicas of my favorite autos, buildings, creatures and appliances you can see at home. It’s simply funny because right after I successfully build the replicas I want out of Lego, I have to break it apart so that I could build more out of the building blocks. I didn’t have much Lego back then so I didn’t have a choice but to take them down.

I continued playing with it until I was 15 years old. I was such a late bloomer with the newest games that time like the SuperNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). I was only aware of the Lego and Household Computer since those were the only toys that were available to us as kids. So our friends will come over to our house and play with our Lego or play a Mario Brothers game in our convenient family computer console from Japan.

As I grew up, I still wasn’t able to enjoy other toys that the other well off kids were getting to enjoy that time such as scooters, in-line skates, skateboards and trampoline. But I had something that most of the kids in the neighborhood don’t have and they often came over to our house just to pick me up to play. Of course, bringing my BMX along with me was the highlight. When we all get to the park, each one takes turn to ride on my bike and in return, they offered me their in-line skates, skateboards and other imported toys that their parents had bought for them just to get a turn to riding my bike. I did enjoy their toys for a short period of time but of course, I was still a kid who wanted all the toys in the world.

That’s why right now that I’m 28 years old, I may say that I’m getting to enjoy each of the latest gadgets that electronics manufacturers are usually coming up with on a regular basis to satiate the certainly never- ending thirst of gadget freaks like me. When the Xbox 360 became available, I was one of the first men and women in our neighborhood who owned one and I’m proud to say that it took quite a while for next person to order one like mine.

Then when the Ipod Touch arrived, I also grabbed one for myself. Same thing happened when the Iphone, Iphone 3g and the Iphone 3gS arrived, I was one of the first people to have one of those. I also have the most incredible laptop I could buy for my gaming, for editing photographs and videos, a printer to print out all my work, an incredibly good DSLR camera that makes me take professional photos that could give Nigel Barker a run for his cash. All these and I’m still upgrading each and every stuff that I find on the market that suits my taste.

You see, it is certainly not too late to enjoy the stuff that we weren’t able to appreciate as kids provided that we work hard for it. I believe that hard-earned money is funds well-spent.

My Boss’s Wedding

Friday, March 12th, 2010

It’s been a while since I last saw my supervisor. Good thing I’ve been hearing some news from her through social networking sites lately. As I remember her, Sharon is the kind of girl who wouldn’t want to be tied up to anyone as she is happy being free as a bird. All she could care for was to get through with the day’s work. She was kind of workaholic for me, though. And when she plays, she’s a playaholic because she knows how to party real hard. She loves grunge fashion and she loves rock music.

I really had a hard time thinking of her as a supervisor. She was more like a friend and a colleague I’d see everyday at work. At work, we weren’t allowed to surf the internet during office hours. And since she was my supervisor, I got away with it. I spent lots of hours surfing the internet, saving pictures of my favorite super heroes and then print them later on, in full color using the company’s printer which was just a few meters away from me. She knew that and she let me get away with it. Of course, I loved her for that.

Just one day, she told me she was leaving due to the fact she did not agree with the way of the management. She said there was a lot of connivance and corruption going on in the office and she did not want any part of it. She hugged me and whispered in my ear to be mindful of the people around me when she leaves simply because she will not be there to defend me anymore. I cried and hugged her for the last time. And then she went into the elevator going down. That was the last incident I ever saw her.

After some years, a lot of social networking sites have sprung up like mushrooms. Needless to say, I had to register with the majority of them simply because I was told that I will be capable of finding and getting in touch with old friends again once they sign up for it as well. And I wasn’t frustrated. I stumbled upon Sharon in a very well-known networking site. I promptly invited her to be in my pals list and she responded at once.

These days, we’ve already been chatting a lot using the site’s instant messenger tool and was I astounded just now when she told me she’s getting married tomorrow. She will become Mrs. Russ. She showed me their particular wedding rings through the images she uploaded. They’re like infinite gold vines. Hers is a smaller one and a larger one for her soon-to-be husband. She showed me her husband’s gifts to her with their images attached to it along with the wedding gown for tomorrow’s occasion. It’s simply breathtaking. The dress sparkled like a diamond and has a lot of gold beads sewn on to the base of the gown. She even showed me the cufflinks she will give to her groom as a gift. The cufflinks appeared as if it were a couple of platinum disco balls.

She said she chose that design because they both love good music and they both love to dance. I’m very happy for her. She said we’ll see each other soon and she’ll bring her husband, too. Even though I can’t be at their wedding tomorrow, I’m still honored to be one of the first people to see her gown, their rings, the cufflinks and of course, the bride-to-be.
