Fishing sees new members coming into the field all the time. It’s hard to say what attracts a person to fishing, especially Bass fishing. However, every year, inumerable noobs go out and buy their first fishing gear in hopes of landing a Largemouth Bass.

You want to spend your time fishing, not untangling a bird nest in your reel.

Leave the Spinning and Bait Casting reels such as the ABU’s and Shimano’s for a little later. They take some experience to use. For now, you just want to focus on catching Bass! A spincast reel is an excellent reel to start with.

If your rod and reel didn’t come with line, then you’ll need to get you a spool. Your spincast reel needs what they call a limp line. Both Trilene and Stren make excellent limp lines, just make sure you read the box and make sure it’s a limp line. Most lines designed for spinning reels will work well in a spincast reel. Just remember, not all fishing line is created equal and some have specific purposes. If you get a line that is too stiff, it will not work well in your spincast reel.

Don’t get complicated with your lure selection. If you’re just wanting to catch a stringer of Bass, then live bait is your best option. Most bait stores will sell large minnows. These are generally called Bass Minnows or Bass Shiners. As for lures, keep it simple. A silver spoon such as a Johnson’s Silver Weedless Spoon is great. Also, Crappie type jigs work very well on Bass, especially the ones with action tails. Tried and true Rapala floating minnow lures have accounted for countless Bass and other Gamefish.

And that’s all you really need to get started Bass Fishing. This set up should cost you less than a $100 and once you have some experience under your belt, you’ll find it’s pretty easy to outfish the local Pro’s. The commercial fishing companies have made it seem like catching a Bass is nearly impossible unless you’re using the latest and greatest gear on the Market. Nothing could be further from the truth. Catching Bass is easy and doesn’t take a lot of sophisticated equipment!

Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge – Mpumalangas Ultimate Mountain Getaway

Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge lies in the vicinity of Badplaas around four hours out of Joburg in a eye-catching setting encompassed by hillsides along with a trout lake. Fly rods are very different to other types of fishing rod, as they are designed to cast a light line, yet are also capable of playing large fish. Rods can be expensive, but a cheap rod is often a false economy.

You will have seen fly fishermen casting, moving the line backwards and forwards a number of times before finally releasing it onto the water. The casts made before releasing the line are called “back casts” and many people think they are made to let out more line. This is part of the reason for back casting, but not the main one.

Whilst it is certainly true that a back cast allows the angler to let out more line, the main reason for the back cast is to “load” the rod, and this is why so many people struggle when they are learning to cast a fly line.

It is the back cast that determines the success of the cast overall. A smooth sweeping back of the rod, a stop at the vertical position and a pause to allow the line to load the rod gives the rod energy that is released on the forward cast, as the rod tip springs forward, effectively flicking the line forward.

If the rod is not stopped in the vertical position on the back cast and is allowed to continue backwards, all that will happen is the line will keep travelling backwards and either end up on the ground when you cast forward, or simply loop over your head on the forwards cast, resulting in frustration.

In addition to stopping the rod when it’s in the vertical position on the back cast, it is also important to pause for about a second, or until you feel the line pulling the rod backwards, before making the forward cast.

So why is the choice of rod so important? It’s because in general a cheaper rod will not have as much flex in it as the more expensive rod. This means that the back cast will not bend the rod very much, resulting in very little energy for the forward cast. A cheaper rod will also be heavier and less durable.

The best thing to do is to buy your rod from a retailer that allows the customer to try the rod before buying. This way you can choose a rod that suits your casting style.
