If you are planning a photo shoot and want a truly professional result, it is important to spend some time with organization. Organizing every aspect of the photo shoot will ensure that your shoot will run smoothly and provide a polished result.
When searching for a location, try to find a place that offers plenty of natural light. Studio light is easy to manipulate, but it is truly not as good as natural light. Natural light adds a special extra element to your photography, giving it depth and character.
If you can find a place with both natural light and plenty of open space, that is ideal. Urban lofts often are the perfect spot for a photo shoot. If you can find a loft with a large open space and a healthy amount of windows, that might be your best bet.
In addition to space and natural light, a loft also has a kitchen and bathroom, and some will have additional space to accommodate an office. Wireless internet and professional power distribution are other important items to ask about. Also be sure to ask the rental service about the elevators. Many loft buildings will have a service or freight elevator, which is perfect for bringing in props and equipment.
Be sure to visit your space prior to the photo shoot. Measure the space carefully and map out where you want to put props or furnishings. Take shots of the loft or studio when you first visit, as well. That way, even if you change your mind about props you will know the room size and ceiling and window heights. This allows you to make changes easily and quickly.
Make a checklist of everything you might need to bring. Be sure all of your equipment is clearly labeled, as well. This will help your assistants work more smoothly. It also is a good idea to bring several laptops loaded with photo editing software, so you can get a true idea of the finished product.
