One of the most popular games these days, among both businessman and the youngsters is pool or billiards. But, often you will find people confusing this with another variation of the game, snooker. All these games, though they need more or less the same equipment, are played with different rules and often are quite different from each other.

The Difference Between Snooker and Pool

So, what’s the basic difference between snooker and pool? Well, to make it simple and easy to comprehend, one can say, that, in the case of snooker, the main objective is to score more points than your opponent. This is not the case for pool, as we all know. In the case of pool, the number of balls remaining on the table is more important and of course, the final sinking of the very last ball – the winning ball is what clinches matters.

Also, another thing about Snooker is, if you look closely, you will find that the table used for Snooker is generally larger than those used for pool. Of course, one can play on smaller tables as well, but, it is the larger ones which are used most often. These tables, though larger, are narrower than the tables used for the more conventional pool. Moreover, they also have cushions, which are absent in the case of pool.

Pool, is a cue game, which we are more familiar with, but there are again, different varieties of pool. There are three main variations – Nine-Ball, Cut Throat and Eight-Ball.

Eight-Ball Game

Of these varieties, the most common one is the Eight Ball game. Most people refer to the Eight-Ball version as “pool”. In fact, many people also refer to this game as “Stripes and Solids”. Professionals, of course, are in a league of their own and they call it “High and Low” not “Stripes and Solids”. The rules of this game get more complex as you progress to higher and higher levels. Nothing to be intimidated about though, if you’re a pool lover, then you will take to them easily!

Basically, in this version of the game, all eight balls are racked with the 8-ball right at the centre of the table. Then, after breaking, the ball which goes in before any of the others should be yours. Players play the game in turns. When one player misses a shot, or commits a foul, then the second player takes over.

The main object of this game, unlike Snooker, is to sink all your balls into the holes at the sides of the table, as well as the 8-ball before your opponent does. Do keep in mind that the very last ball which will go in, is the 8-ball, so don’t aim at the holes with the ball, beforehand! It is very easy to get caught up in the excitement of this game, but billiards requires a steadiness of mind, so do be calm while you play and make sure to have a great game!

The other day, I asked my teenaged son where he was off to and he promptly replied that he was off to play a game of pool with his buddies. It reminded me of my younger days when I was an avid pool enthusiast. In fact, I distinctly remember that it is over one of these games of pool, that I met my wife, Margaret.

Types Of Pool

The most common variety of pool is the Eight-Ball game. Most often, people are referring to this variety of the game when they ask you if you’re up for a game of pool. Other lesser known varieties are the Nine-Ball game and the Cut Throat versions.

In the Nine-Ball game, all balls numbered 1 through 9 are used and arranged in the form of a diamond, according to their number, with the ball numbered 9, right at the centre. The main objective of the game is to sink the balls, in order of their numbers from the lowest one, to the highest one. If the lowest numbered ball on the table is hit first, any ball which goes into the hole counts. Quite obviously, you can use the lowest numbered ball on the table to use other balls.

If, of course, you fail to hit the lowest numbered ball on the table first, you will be committing a foul, which you definitely do not want to be doing because your opponent will then have a cue in hand to start their turn. If you hit ball number 9 on a legal shot, you win!

The Cut Throat variety is more of a social game and is played by three players at a time, where each player has 5 balls (1-5, 6-10 and 11-15) and the aim is to sink all your opponents’ balls. It’s a fun game, much lighter than the conventional varieties of pool, so do try it out when you can.
