Our Worst And Best Boating Moments

When we are on our boat, just being on our boat, is one of those very few places in this increasingly crazy world where we can truly find absolute peace and contentment. Well that is, most of the time anyway! It is probably something to do with a sense of detachment and merely just getting away from it all.

This watery pastime has provided us with both the best and worst moments of our lives. The best, well , that’s really hard to choose. There have been loads but the one that always seems to spring to mind is quite unusual. Many years ago, cruising five miles off the Suffolk Coast in thick fog , only making about 4 knots due to weather conditions, the sun suddenly broke through the gloom appearing to create a halo of light around our boat, Sahira. For a time she was bathed in an eerie golden glow while the rest of the world was completely obscured by the fog. It was as though nothing else existed. We are not usually woolly headed but it was, we agreed, a truly spiritual experience.

As for the worst experience, quite a few rough sea moments come to mind but for me the most scary was on a trip from Smir in Morocco to Gibraltar, once again in thick fog! There had been a few reports of piracy incidents in the area, with yotties robbed, nothing terribly serious and no one hurt. Nothing like the Somalian problems recently reported. Anyway, we were trying to get back to Gibraltar inorder to beat a forecasted storm in the Straits and once again we were doing about 4-5 knots because of the conditions. A ‘blob’ suddenly appeared on the radar about mile behind. Despite three course changes it continued to follow, closing slightly to mile. We were of course unarmed and reluctant to increase speed because we were approaching the busy Straits of Gibraltar. However the blob suddenly turned away and disappeared into, what looked on the chart like a deserted area of the Moroccan coast. We don’t know to this day what was behind this but it wasn’t the Moroccan Coastguard because when we left Smir their boats were locked up, covered with tarpaulins and deserted. Fishermen would have no reason to follow us. There had been much people and drug traffiking between Europe and Africa so we feel that it was connected with that. Anyway, it was very scary.

How To Bottom Paint Your Boat

If your vessel spends the majority of time in the water, it will most likely need a fresh coat of paint every season or two. The process may seem overwhelming at first, but it is relatively easy and can be accomplished over a weekend. The following are some tips to make the job quicker and smoother.

While your boat is still wet, use a wash such as the Boat Wash from Wise Solutions to thoroughly clean the bottom of the boat. Next, use a pressure washer to further clean the bottom of your boat and remove anything you may have missed. Chipped paint and loose paint flakes need to be carefully cleaned and removed before proceeding. The old paint from the boat’s bottom needs to be removed next. Use a marine stipper, such as EFS-2500 from Molecular-Tech Coatings. It is important to always read all of the manufacturers’ instructions thoroughly before beginning.

The next step is to sand the boat’s bottom with 80 grit paper with a random orbital sander. A standard belt sander is likely to cause excessive damage to your hull. We also highly recommend using a vacuum hose connector to remove the messy dust. An economical alternative to the connector is simply using a plastic tubing from your local hardware store. Saftey equipment such as respirator, gloves, and earplugs is also highly encouraged. After the sanding, wash the bottom of the boat again and make certain that all remaining paint chips and debris are removed from the surface.

Before you begin painting your boat bottom, you will need to choose an appropriate color. A great tip is to choose a different color from which your boat bottom is already painted so that it will be easy to recognize when it’s time to paint again. A variety of eco-friendly anti-fouling, copper-free and solvent-free bottom paint is available for purchase in today’s market. Be sure to check the weather forecasts before you begin painting; you don’t want wind (dust) or rains to wreak havoc as you’re trying to paint. It’s also a good idea to have extra paint rollers on hand, just in case you need them.

After taping off the waterline, use a paint shaker before applying the paint. Use a short-napped roller with an optional extension handle to apply the paint to help ensure being able to reach the entire boats bottom surface. Try to work quickly as many bottom paints dry fast; check the paint specifications to see if a second coat is required.

At some point in the process you will need to remove the stands underneath the boat to complete the painting. Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions as to how long your new coat of paint needs to dry before you can put the boat in the water. Drying times will vary with outside temperatures and could be as short at 12 hours up to overnight.
