Port Alberni Tourism Takes You To Barkley Sound

Barkley Sound, situated between Port Alberni and Bamfield, is a scuba diver’s dream. It’s a true highlight of the Port Alberni tourism industry, with clear water and tidal changes that allow for excellent visibility and distinct marine life. Throughout history, many navigators confused Barkley Sound with the Juan de Fuca Strait, resulting in numerous shipwrecks on reefs and islands. Today, Barkley Sound is known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific,” as it has over 60 shipwrecks.

Barkley Sound’s most famous shipwreck is the Vanlene, a Panamanian freighter which struck Austin Island in 1972. The Vanlene was shipping 300 Dodge Colts from Japan to Washington when a combination of dense fog and broken navigational aids led to its demise. A portion of the ship remained above water, so most of the Colts were recovered, but 53,000 gallons of fuel oil leaked into Barkley Sound. A few years later, a nasty storm knocked the ship off her perch and sent her entirely into the water. The wreck is suitable for advanced divers and has a maximum depth of 30 metres. Chartering a boat out of Port Alberni is the most straightforward way to get to the Vanlene.

Another great dive site out of Port Alberni is the wreck of the Thiepval, a Battle class naval trawler used by the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1930, she struck an uncharted rock in Barkley Sound while on patrol duty. Divers from Port Alberni didn’t discover the wreck until almost 30 years later, and eventually recovered her deck gun, which is now displayed in Ucluelet. The Thiepval is often visited by diving charters within the Port Alberni tourism industry, as it is a shallow, safe dive site that is coated in marine life.

In 1975, the Orpheus was sailing from San Fransisco to Nanaimo when it collided with the SS Pacific near Cape Flattery. The Orpheus now lies under 40 to 80 feet of water; the Pacific’s wreckage was never found. I’m In Love With A Mule

I am reminded why being a California resident is so desirable now that the dreary, damp days of winter have been replaced by the balmy temperatures of spring . Vibrant green grass and patches of wildflowers cloak the hillsides. Our impeccably clean beaches are remain too cold for water sport seeking tourists and belong to the locals. The peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies blend into our majestic mountains in the distance.. It truly is heaven on earth.

My husband, kids and I have begun spending much of our weekends outside since all this beauty is just outside our door.. We have enjoyed spur-of-the-moment picnics in meadows alongside Ortega Highway and day trips to Big Bear to engage in snowball fights. We have spent evenings at the beach roasting marshmallows after fatiguing days spent peddling our beach cruisers back and forth on the boardwalk between the Huntington, Newport and Balboa Piers, Yes, life is good.

We pack an arsenal of paraphernalia for each of these day trips. No trip is complete without lip balm, snacks, cans of pop, water bottles, Frisbees, a playing cards, blankets and beach towels.

My most favorite of all these little necessitites is the Ice Mule. While shopping at a hunting/fishing outlet store, my husband acquired our Mule ( which is funny because he would never harm a fly). Thinking it might be of use one day, he brought it home. He was right.

We rarely leave home without it, our refreshments and drinks stay cold for hours and hours.. In fact, I a short time ago realized that it had been left in our SUV overnight and was dreading to removing the deviled eggs that surely would emit noxious fumes upon removal from their Tupperware grave. To my astonishment the eggs and the water bottles inside the Ice Mule were still cold to the touch, even though they had been in the bag for over 24 hours!

Now I take the Ice Mule with me to the grocery store. My Mule gets filled with all of the perishable items and I can proceed with my errands before returning home. Quite simply, I love this thing!

Soon the grassy green hills will turn a drab shade of brown and the beaches will become a jam-packed, noisy mecca for the tourist traffic. Tourists will be searching for parking spots nearest to the beach (hint, these don’t exist in the summer) and traffic on Pacific Coast Highway will be reduced to a snail’s pace.

You can bet that our Mule will be with us to keep our beverages, snacks, sunscreen and temperaments cool when we do feel brave enough fight the summer crowds. On the mega hot 90 degree days, which we always see toward the end of summer, we will be sitting by the pool with our diet cola, Popsicles and iced tea. To minimize effort during the lazy days of summer, I am planning on using my Ice Mule poolside, even though the kitchen will only be a few steps away. In fact, once I sink into that lounge chair I might just dwell there all summer long..

The original HNV baits were so high in protein they could fill fish up prematurely before being caught and also because the ingredients were costly it was far from the done thing to introduce 10 kilograms of free bait at the beginning of a fishing session unlike many anglers do as a habit today! Introducing many kilograms of bait really was a product of the use of much cheaper bird foods and fish meals and other forms of nutritional baits; but always remember you only need one bait in the right place on a suitable rig to hook a fish and you certainly do not need to make many kilograms of the most potent homemade baits to equal the results of the vast majority of the most expensive ready made baits!

The major reason why you can have absolute confidence in your own unique homemade baits and recipes is because preferably you will have studied the fish in detail in terms of the many factors that you can potentially exploit to manipulate their feeding modes, feeding habits, feeding intensity and location and so on. I spent a very long time putting this kind of information all into my ebooks to make this far quicker and easier to understand, and to put into practice in formulating your own unique baits that catch fish again and again. Now I will provide you with a simple homemade bait recipe for big fish that will kick start you on the bait-making road – or will give you something a little bit different if you already have some experience!

The bait below is not a complex one and anyone can make it – or versions of it with confidence when aiming for big carp or catfish for instance. This bait is based primarily on highly digestible fish meal and not caseins to keep costs low and there are additions in it that you may or may not utilise to boost effects and performance and make your bait especially unique. When making baits it is an art and not just science so bear in mind that levels and ingredients can be adjusted to however you like and this bait although digestible and highly nutritionally attractive is not as optimised for digestion as is possible looking at this recipe form a scientific standpoint – but your fish will not mind at all!

7 ounces of low temperature fish meal. 2 ounces of calcium caseinate. 1 ounce of 90 mesh casein. 2 ounces of CC Moore Meggablend Red. 1 ounce of blood plasma. 1 ounce of hydrolysed poultry protein. 1 ounce of abalone extract. 1 ounce of chopped fennel seeds.

This bait can be made with betaine and liquid eggs with Minamino or other liquid foods etc such as home liquidised liver and anchovy extract for instance; and a low level of oil too is a very beneficial (such as walnut oil.) As for flavours, palatants, sweeteners or labels etc you might choose an essential oil of your choice or even natural orange extract in sunflower oil (just to be different) from the local supermarket; suppliers are many but the blood plasma plus a few of the other things mentioned are supplied by CC Moore on line.
