Blow bubbles in Punta Cana

Friday, January 7th, 2011

If you are an avid diver, then Punta Cana is the destination for you. The setting is ideal for both experienced and new divers. Whether you want to drift with the current and watch the colorful sea life or explore a sunken ship, diver operators will find the right dive site for your level of expertise. If you are already an avid diver, make sure to bring your certification papers with you on vacation. If you are a newbie, lessons are available.

Most of the all-inclusive Punta Cana resorts have their own scuba shop in-house. Daily lessons are usually complimentary and are intended to familiarize guests with the sport and are not in depth. The lessons will take place in the resort pool and can be attended by adults and children. If you are still feeling nervous about diving even after your lesson, an open water dive can be arranged. Open water dives are conducted in shallow waters under the close eye of the instructors.

Just off the shores of the Grand Paradise Bavaro resort on Bavaro beach, is the longest coral reef in the Dominican Republic. The vibrant colors of the corals and large schools of tropical fish will be a sight to behold. There are hundreds of varieties of marine life living in the coral reef, some of which have not even been named yet. Larger creatures are not as plentiful but maybe a shark or two will pop up. Just don’t ‘feed the fish’ or go ‘chumming’. Feed the fish is divers lingo for vomiting in the water while diving. Some divers call it chumming because it attracts the sharks. Of course chumming is also a method of legitimate shark baiting used by fishermen.

Serious scuba divers may want to consider wreck diving. Go down and explore a submerged ship or other man made structure to see what lovely creatures of taken up residence in the nooks and crannies. Sunken ships often become small reefs themselves, if left long enough. Barracuda are a frequent inhabitant of sunken ships, adding to their mysterious reputation.

Cave diving may be something to try, depending on your own need for adventure. This type of diving does require some different equipment, and the scuba shop at your resort will be able to provide everything you need. Underwater caves are a little spooky, but amazing all the same. The rock formations and light reflections can produce a feeling of disorientation, but if you can push that sensation aside and enjoy the architecture of the rock formations, you will have a memorable experience.

In addition to cave diving, Punta Cana also provides some incredible cliff diving opportunities. Isla Saona has a limestone cliff that drops more than 80 feet below the ocean surface. Octopuses love to hide on underwater cliff-faces, changing their color to blend in. So if you think you see a rock move – it wasn’t a rock.

Drift diving is something for the baby diver, or newbie. It entails just floating along with the current watching the fish swim by. There is no deep water diving involved as you usually stay close to the surface. This may be a good way for families with children to experience scuba diving.

Any way you slice it, Punta Cana is the place to go for divers on vacation. Even if you are just a guppy, learning to dive in a beautiful place like the Dominican Republic would be a great choice. The warm blue waters and diverse tropical sea life make the learning process that much more enjoyable. Expert divers will be very pleased to find so many tremendous opportunities for adventure dives in the waters off Bavaro beach. Since diving lessons, excursions and equipment can be arranged so easily right at your resort – it is easy to see why diving is one of the most popular activities in Punta Cana.

The Romance Of The Intracoastal Waterway

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

America’s Intracoastal Waterway is an inland way to travel from the northeastern states down the eastern seaboard to the Gulf of Mexico. Officially it goes from the Managua River in New Jersey to Brownsville, Texas, but there are so many connecting rivers and bays that it seems to be part of every state from Massachusetts on south.

Much of this passage’s length, established by an Act of congress in 1919, is natural bodies of water with diverse names: sounds, bays, lagoons, harbors, rivers, and the Gulf. Man-made canals connect these so that boats can travel from New Jersey (officially, but in actual fact from Boston, Massachusetts) to Brownsville, Texas. The Atlantic can be accessed at several points of the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as many rivers.

The United States Army corps of Engineers maintains the inland water highway, with fuel taxes levied on commercial travel funding the project. The minimum depth is mandated by law at twelve feet, but there are sections that are no more than seven to nine feet deep. There is no toll and no special taxes for recreational vessels.

‘Snowbirds’, or those who live in the north but travel south for the winter, use the passage to get their boats back and forth and to enjoy the journey. The changing scenery is unsurpassed, with a wealth of wildlife and waterfowl and the fascination of commercial shipping. There are many services along the route, with hotels, restaurants, marinas, and marine shopping sites.

Not all Americans know that it is possible to circumnavigate the eastern portion of the United States. A lot of commercial traffic carries manufactured goods, foodstuffs, and petroleum products over the water to many states. The passage connects to eight major rivers and many of the nation’s principal harbors.

It’s a real geography lesson to learn about the Intracoastal Waterway, a really alternate route. Check on-line and perhaps ask for a free navigational guide to this amazing inland passage.

Top 10 Tropical Island Paradises you would love to visit in 2011

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

When we first set about compiling this list of the Top 10 Tropical Island Paradises we started with the idea of the typical story book desert island, but of course that’s a deserted island and not exactly what we wanted. Our perfect tropical island needs luxury and exclusivity, but also we need to be pampered, looked after and provided for. So which did we decide were our Top 10 Tropical Island Paradises for 2011?

Antigua – A beautiful Caribbean Island that is part of the Leeward Islands group. Stunning beaches in shades of pink through to white, coral reefs for snorkelling and diving. These are just a few of the things that make Antigua so special. No wonder it’s popular for honeymoons and as a wedding destination. Celebrity spotting is almost a sport here, well a laid back sport at least. Our choice location on Antigua is Nonsuch Bay with its secluded beach and 40 acres of landscaped tropical grounds.

Aruba – Where the Azure Sea and Sky seem to merge together this Southern Caribbean island has something for everyone but has a real tropical island feel. Swaying Palm trees and white beaches all add to the experience. You could stay in one of the Ocean Front Rooms of the Tamarijn right on the white sandy beach of Druif Beach and fall asleep to the lapping of the waves. Pure Heaven

Cayman Islands – Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are the three islands that make up this stunning trio. They are set in the beautiful turquoise waters of the Western Caribbean. Don’t miss out on the amazing Lionfish Roundup event at Pirates Point Resort on Little Cayman.

Fiji – The South Pacific Island of Fiji of course is everyone’s idea of a dream tropical island, situated to the North of New Zealand Fiji has a character all of it’s own. It is actually a collection of more than 300 individual islands all with those amazing crystal clear shallow waters lapping against white sandy beaches. The range of activities available are amazing. You could stay at a beach front 5 star resort or back pack through the jungle. Our recommendation is Castaway Island, a stunning 174 acre private island resort.

Maldives – A chain of more than a thousand small islands, in fact many are not even islands just tiny atolls that are little more than a short stroll in size. You truly can feel like an island castaway here. Each resort island has a choice of apartments or bungalows on stilts over the stunning seascape. One of our favorites is Full Moon Resort, a narrow atoll that literally takes 20 seconds to walk from one side to the other and maybe 2 minutes to walk the length.

Mauritius – A relatively large tropical island paradise, well compared with some of our other Top 10 choices anyway. Easy to get to and something for everyone when you get there. Like any great tropical island we have the required clear warm waters and white sands here on Mauritius. There are also a broad range of places to stay, we really like Le Saint Geran, a private peninsula jutting out into the ocean.

Perhentian Islands – Somewhere east of Malaysia you just might find the Perhentian Islands, a pair of islands lost in time. There are no roads here, if you want to go somewhere you either trek through the jungle or hop along the coastline in a boat. The Arwana Eco Resort would be one of out top choices here.

Seychelles – Just north of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean are the hundred or so islands that make up the Seychelles. Every last one stunningly beautiful. The second largest island is Preslin with it’s towering palm trees that are inhabited by rare species of birds and animals.

St Lucia – The Eastern Caribbean sea is where we find exotic, esoteric and ethereal St Lucia. A backdrop of wooded hills overlooking stunning beaches. In St Lucia there is an activity for everbody from horse riding to snorkelling, from diving in the clear waters to hiking through the forests. Jaw dropping Jalousie Plantation has got to be the place to stay here.

Tahiti – This stunning pacific island has been the star of many a hollywood movie and so it should be. Once more a huge range of activities in a stunning setting. The Intercontinental Tahiti resort has its own private beach and everything else a tropical paradise island stay requires.

You will find a wide variety of awe inspiring terrain, one of a kind wildlife, and more than enough waterways for recreation. Canada has some new boating laws for pleasure crafts you need to know.

Plenty of water ways are available in an area, so dry it could almost be called a desert, is in Okanagan Valley. At one of many locations you can put the boat in and have hours of fun and leisure. Its uncommon variety of climate and landscape have made it the favorite of thousands, and is perfect for sailing and boating. If you have a motorized boat, make sure you have your operators card.

One place to consider is Adams River where every four years sockeye salmon return to their place of birth by the millions. This event is world famous and can be enjoyed from several different areas around the river. There are many resorts and lodges available to accommodate travelers who need to soak up a little time indoors.

For those who do not have their own boat, there is Big Rideau Lake where you will find a boaters paradise. The waterway consists of lakes and rivers that are connected by canals. Whatever way you travel there, you can rent a boat, just remember that you will have to have a craft operator card for motorized boats.

With a fabulous array of 100,000 lakes, some of which are therapeutic, are found in Saskatchewan. This province is a great holiday and with a variety of lakes it is a dream for fishermen. While fishing here you might land an underwater monster, because Walleye salmon have been caught weighing over 18 pounds. That could surely make anyone feel like a sport.

On a clear day, Ontario beaches seem more like the Caribbean than Canada, with rafts and boats enjoying the same waters. Lake Erie is fed from the west by the Huron river and from the east by St. Clair. This a mecca of boating activity and a battleground of the War of 1812, if you are in Canadian waters you will need to comply with their boating laws and regulations.

The fresh water system formed by the Great Lakes and their connecting channels is the largest on earth. Clearly seen from the moon, their interesting shapes look erie, one of them even looks like the head of a wolf. Fed by many rivers, should their combined water be spread evenly, they would cover the entire United States under 9.5 feet of water.

The Canadian Rockies offer much for water enthusiasts with a boat license, and Alberta has over 600 lakes from with to choose, for jet boating and scuba diving. Surfing the rapids on a waterboard is a great sport to the addition, and enjoyed in Alberta as a favored pastime of old and young. Unforgettable Cape Town Shark Cage Diving

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Tourists travel from far and wide to Cape Town to take part in one of the world’s fastest growing travel activities – shark cage diving. The seas around Cape Town contain large numbers of Great White Sharks.

What makes Cape Town special is the fact that there are many breaches in Cape waters. A breach is where the shark literally jumps out of the water when attacking its prey. The shark swims below its target far enough to then shoot itself up vertically, breaking the water and killing its prey.

Chris Fallows is a world famous photographer who was able to capture images of this fearsome predator tackling its prey in midair. He managed to do this by cutting out the shape of a seal using a common carpet and then pulling it behind his boat to attract sharks. In this way he was able to take magnificent photographs of Great Whites breaching.

Gansbaai, about an hours’ drive from the city, is a popular base for many cage dives. The little village is a gathering place for shark fanatics because it’s the closest harbour to Seal Island where numerous Great Whites hunt Cape Fur seals.

A large population of seals live on this island as it is uninhabited by man and is an ideal space for them to feed, mate and raise their young. These seals form an important part of the Great White Sharks diet. When seals leave or return to the island they have to move through an area that the sharks regularly hunt in. Often the victims are young or wounded seals.

The Great White Shark is an endangered species and there are stringent regulations which must be followed by operators. Tourists are coached in safety measures before they set out.

A normal shark cage diving day starts with breakfast and a briefing of what lies ahead. The group will then take a short boat trip to Seal Island where they will look for a good spot to lower the cage. A trail of scent is laid to attract sharks to the vicinity of the cage and they usually start arriving quickly. They circle the area and many will remain for an hour or more as sharks are naturally curious creatures.

Shark cage diving is one of those truly once in a lifetime experiences that should not be missed.
