For anyone who likes to spend time out exploring the countryside then you must make sure that you take the right equipment with you and wear the right clothing. You must make sure that you wear a good quality pair of walking boots and that you have a good quality rucksack as well. It is this which you will put any provisions, clothing, tent and sleeping bag should you intend to be away from home for several days. However, as there are a great many rucksacks to choose from it can prove somewhat of challenge to decide which one is right for you.
In order to help you determine just which rucksack you should purchase we provide some points below that you may find useful and keep in mind when making your purchase.
1. The first thing you need to do is sit down and work out what it is you intend to be putting in your rucksack. Once you know this then you can decide on the size you need to purchase. Although you may think buying a larger size one than you need is a good idea it can lead to problems. Often if people buy big rucksacks they will put additional items in theirs that they don’t actually need causing the weight to be carried much greater. Just the same if you think by going for a smaller size one is going to be more cost effective think again. With the smaller ones you will find that you have to secure items you need to the outside which puts it out of balance and so again it will be far more difficult to carry.
2. It is important that you choose a rucksack that fits well on your back so trying out a number of different makes and models should be considered. Look for a specialist shop that has this equipment and when trying out the rucksacks ask the staff to load some weight in the back similar to that you would expect to be carrying when out walking or camping.
3. As you try out the various rucksacks make sure that you check the straps provide your body with adequate support and help to distribute the weight inside evenly. Spend some time in the store with it. You need to lean backwards and forwards whilst wearing it to ensure that the weight remains well distributed inside along with you swaying from side to side. A rucksack that moves when you are doing this is going to cause you problems as your balance is going to be thrown off as you walk.
Another thing that you should do is to walk around the store several times and if they have some stairs go up and down these to again make sure that the weight inside remains distributed evenly. Also you can quickly identify any problems which only slight at the moment could become major ones when you have been carrying yours for some time.
4. When it comes to the shoulder straps on your rucksack make sure that they have a lot of padding but are also firm. This will help to ensure that the back remains in position in the centre of your back and so helping you to keep your balance as you walk. Although they should fit snuggly against your body they should still allow you to move your arms and upper body easily.
5. When considering buying any of the rucksacks now available make sure that yours has a good hip belt fitted to it. This is crucial as this is what will be bearing most of the weight carried inside yours. By having a good fitting hip belt will also mean that when carrying yours it feels comfortable and helps to reduce the amount of strain being placed on your back.
